The mission of ARCRNSISS is to enhance Australia’s capacity and capability to conduct innovative, cross-disciplinary policy-relevant, research in spatially integrated social science and to provide the evidence base for understanding the issues and challenges facing people and places in coping with changes in contemporary society.
ARCRNSISS will facilitate Australia’s social scientists to develop and apply spatially integrating research paradigms and approaches in pursuing these objectives:
- Enhance existing, and facilitate the emergence of new capacity and capability among social scientists to undertake world class research and development in SISS through cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Promote and facilitate increased and more effective cross-disciplinary collaboration between researchers in Australia and internationally.
- Engage and nurture young and inexperienced researchers to build research capacity and capability and to ensure future research leadership.

The new Federal Government has a golden opportunity to provide the leadership needed to drive a national reform agenda to address the challenges facing Australia’s diverse cities and regions, according to Professor Bob Stimson who on Friday launches the first report of the Australia Future Task Force at the 3rd State of Australian Cities conference in Adelaide.
The Task Force calls for federal leadership in developing an across-government co-ordinated and collaborative approach to the six big issues discussed in the report: the changing demographic balance; engaging with work - labour markets, jobs, incomes and skills; housing choice and affordability; infrastructure deficiencies; the environmental and resource management imperative; and institutional dysfunction and reform.
- The Brian McLoughlin Postgraduate Award
- The Brian McLoughlin Postgraduate Award has been established by Urban Policy and Research to encourage new and emerging scholars in fields such as urban planning, human geography, urban sociology and housing studies.
The Award includes a cash amount of AUS $1,000 and one year's free subscription to Urban Policy and Research.

The Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis
The Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis, launching in 2008, aims to provide an international forum for the interchange of information and ideas relating to housing, housing markets and the interaction thereof. The focus is placed on the interface between academic research and practical application by disseminating new research findings alongside articles related to everyday professional practice. Academic papers are refereed to the highest academic standard through double blind peer review. Overall the papers provide a unique contribution to understanding international housing markets from both a detailed and broader perspective.
- International Microsimulation Association
- Those interested in microsimulation-based methods might be interested to hear about the launch of the International Microsimulation Association - www.microsimulation.org. The association aims to promote the free inter-change of experience and ideas between practitioners of microsimulation worldwide. To this end the goals of the association are to provide:
- a repository of links to online microsimulation-related resources
- an email discussion list
- an email news announcement list
- a bibliography of microsimulation-related publications
- an online refereed journal
Finally, submissions are invited for the March 2006 launch issue of the association's journal www.microsimulation.org/IJM/
