Current Research Interests
Current Research:

Current Research 1:

A new approach to sustainable residential form for the Australian suburb My observations suggest that new outer suburban form in Australia is, in reality, moving in an unsustainable direction. My proposed solution makes use of ideas from contemporary British practice. It would not only be of higher density but would also be low-rise, have private and bio-diverse gardens, a sense of place and take advantage of vernacular architecture.

Current Research 2:

A new paradigm for the design of ustainable cities I have a long-term project developing a new paradigm for the design of sustainable settlements based on morphological rather than land-use considerations. It is evolving into a neo-rationalist model for the design of sustainable settlements in which physical form is derived from the goals of pursuit of sustainability and quality of life. It extends transit-oriented development into a comprehensive city form.

Current Research 3:

Design control I invented the design area as a way of applying design objectives to small areas and handling varying levels of intervention by planning agencies. This concept was adopted by Dacorum Borough Council, with my advice and collaboration, as the basis for the planning guidance within its local plan. My ideas were comprehensively set out in my 1996 book. I was able to promote many of my ideas while a leading the planning policy of Chelmsford Borough Council. The pro-active approach to design control that was developed there is set out in my latest book which is currently being prepared for publication.
